Meals for giants

Portion sizes are a problem. I ordered a small coffee and an orange juice for breakfast. I was dumbstruck when it arrived. Since when was a bucket of coffee (refillable) small? One squeezed orange would have been fine. My glass contained about 8. This means that I needed to go to the loo very soon after leaving the café and I couldn’t use the restrooms in another café without purchasing something so I ordered another “small” coffee. This vicious cycle will probably go on my whole holiday. Each dish we order could feed us both for a week. This is the opposite problem to Japan where we are often still hungry after we leave a restaurant after having ordered over 10 dishes. We have started to become more savvy – ordering things between us, going for appetizers instead of main courses and laying off the bread. Fortunately, there are lots of hills in San Francisco to try to walk off these extra calories.
